Christians in Pakistan are in an inferior position. Most are descendants of Dalits and belong to the poor underclass of society. Many Christians in Pakistan feel vulnerable and insecure. Not only because they are a minority in a country full of Muslims, but also because they have little knowledge about their own faith. Fear is often a big part of their lives. In Pakistan, an estimated 80 per cent of street and sewer cleaners are Christians. People usually avoid shaking hands with them, befriending them and even eating or drinking with them. Christians are seen as second-class citizens. Among Christians, there is much poverty and deprivation, sometimes even slavery. Discrimination occurs in many areas. Churches are closely monitored and have been targets of terrorist attacks several times in the past. In Pakistan, Christians are very often persecuted under the blasphemy law. On the Christian persecution ranking, Pakistan ranks seventh.
During a working visit in 2023 we saw a lot of need, particularly with regard to clean drinking water. This is not available. If there is any canal within a walking distance of an hour, it is polluted water.
This is why diaconate CGK is helping a number of communities with a water filtration system. The first one has now been completed and it is in Nasrit Colony. What a celebration the opening was! There had been so many prayers for 'better water'. And that now comes just from the tap, right next to the church. How God is thanked for this provision for their needs.
