Nicaragua is a poor country. Many people live below subsistence level. That is why a group of Christians in the capital Managua started a project for underprivileged women. And it works! Over a hundred women followed vocational training last year, enabling them to earn a living with a trade such as sewing, jewellery making or beautician. Below is the story Dina Membreño, who did hairdressing training.
Dina's story
Hello brothers and sisters of the Dutch churches. My name is Dina Membreño Guadamuz. With my two sisters, I live with my mother. This year I took the hairdressing course. Until recently, I worked at the school gate. There I sold sandwiches to the children. I really wanted to do a course of study, with which I could help others. I only did primary school.
I found the months of training exciting: I wanted to learn everything well and I followed all the lessons. On Sundays, we now go to the church where the hairdressing training was given. As trainees, we also did social activities. Furthermore, we learnt that it was our duty to serve others. We cut the hair of many people and always for free.
On the day I got my diploma, I was also given all the necessary equipment I need as a hairdresser. I am very happy with that. Several people from our neighbourhood now come to my house to get their hair cut for a fee.
We are very poor women. I am happy with the help the Christian Brothers gave me and my colleagues. They were able to do so thanks to help from Christians in the Netherlands and that is why I also want to thank you. May God bless you for the wonderful support.
