Twelve-year-old Aisha wears a cheerful smile when it is her turn to make sandwiches for her classmates in the posh Arab neighbourhood of Beit Hanina (East Jerusalem). She herself does not live here: Aisha comes from the overcrowded Shuafat refugee camp, where she lives with her mother and six older half-brothers. Her father is absent and Aisha's mother struggles to raise the children alone.

She never brought anything to eat

Her cheerful smile did not always carry Aisha. Her teacher noticed that Aisha always looked pale and tired. She had difficulty concentrating in class and never did her homework. She also never brought anything to eat. The teacher says Aisha was embarrassed when she had to admit that she was hungry and that the little food at home was mostly eaten by her brothers.

More than enough bread

The organisation Yad Elie provides meals to children of parents who cannot afford them. In addition, the organisation provides education on healthy eating.

Since Yad Elie's meal plan was also introduced at Aisha's school, she can eat as many sandwiches as she wants. She even takes some home.

Beams of happiness

Her teacher says: “Aisha has become a completely different girl. She enjoys going to school and is eager to learn and curious. She beams with happiness in the school kitchen when she and some other students prepare the food. She has developed a sense of self-worth and significance that will help her cope with her difficult situation at home.”
