Project description
At Ghana primary education is at a very low level. The government has insufficient resources to provide good buildings and teaching staff. As a result, classes are too full (around 50 children per class) and there are virtually no teaching aids.
The Ahanti region is a rural region in Ghana. Here the primary schools are far apart, so children sometimes have to go as far as 5 or 6 km. to get to their schools. And this is mostly done on foot; there are not many bicycles.
Why this project?
In the village of Akrofonso, there was no school. Children had to walk for a long time to get to a primary school. Therefore, many children from the village did not go to school. Some also felt it was not safe enough.
Gerrie Kreijkes and Gerrit de Wind from the municipality of Dedemsvaart got in touch with Jones Mensah, a teacher and Alex Ofouri a representative of the municipality locally and surrounding villages. They cared about the lack of the school and came up with a plan to build a complete school over the course of a few years and also support starting education. Thus began the plan for Ebenezer Community School in 2021. Construction is now halfway through. There is also a desire to purchase a school bus.
The teachers will tell the Bible stories to the children. And as children learn to read, they can also read the Bible stories themselves. It is also the board's vision to shape the love of Jesus Christ in the hearts of the children from a basic Christian attitude.
Impact
This primary school is an opportunity for poor children to receive a good basic education. This increases their possibility of a good further education or workplace. Those who receive a good education also see more opportunities to help develop the land. Not to export all agricultural products, but to cultivate them and add value to them.
