Project description
In the south of Nepal great poverty prevails. People earn too little to earn a living and have no other options. The organisation ACN wants to end material, social and spiritual poverty in this area.
Why this project?
People in Nawalparasi district (southern Nepal) live off farming, but that does not bring in enough to make ends meet. They often only have enough food for a few months. There is no investment in education, so there are no other sources of income. The organisation ACN helps by bringing people together in self-help groups, breaking the ill effects of the Hindu caste system, holding children's activities and providing (agricultural) training.
Impact
People learn to grow food more and properly. They also learn to save money and are retrained. So they can regain their livelihoods and look to the future with hope.
What can we learn?
'If someone is hungry, don't give him a fish but a fishing rod.' They understood this well in Nepal. Preventing hunger is better than staving off hunger.
