Project description

At Jerusalem a large number of Jewish and Arab families live below the poverty line. Children of parents who cannot afford to pay for school lunch are at school with an empty stomach. The Jewish organisation Yad Elie wants to help by providing meals to the poorest, regardless of religion or origin. In addition, Yad Elie provides education on healthy eating to teachers and parents in many ways. In this way, children's chances of healthy development are increased.

Why this project?

'No child should go hungry in the land of milk and honey.' That is what the people of Yad Elie think, and deputies wholeheartedly agree with them. Deputies are working closely with the Centre for Israel Studies (CiS) in this project. Those who have to miss a healthy meal every day cannot develop properly, both physically and mentally. Yad Elie offers Arab and Jewish children healthy meals at school. In addition, teachers and parents are educated on the importance of good nutrition.

Impact

Last year, Jewish and Arab teenagers in the Jerusalem Forrest laid out a vegetable garden together. School gardens and orchards were established at several schools, and management was handed over to the schools themselves. Health and nutrition education was provided in schools. Yad Elie is pleased with the enthusiasm of the schools they visit. Many see the importance of good nutrition.

What can we learn?

Even in a developed country, poverty can be more widespread than you might suspect. This does not only apply to Israel. Those who are themselves richly blessed may help people near and far.
