Senegal is among the 30 poorest countries in the world. This has many implications. There are few opportunities for training medical personnel, resulting in a huge shortage of doctors. Tropical doctor Tabitha Kieviet works in a mission clinic in Senegal. She trains Senegalese nurses to meet (more) local health needs. This way, more people can use medical care.
Why this project?
Senegal is among the 30 poorest countries in the world. This has many implications. There are few opportunities for training medical staff. A nurse in Senegal does not have the kind of training we have in the Netherlands. There are few hospitals and clinics. In many villages and towns in this country, basic medical care is not available. Especially in rural areas, medical needs are high.
Impact
In addition to her work at the clinic, Tabitha has built an extensive network of Senegalese health workers in the Dakar region. Through targeted training in different locations, she transfers important knowledge to and with them. Protocols are shared and health programmes initiated. As a result, better medical care can be provided. And expands Tabitha's team.
Thanks to the support and cooperation of deputies in the diaconate, we have been able to make great progress in training and guiding Christian health personnel in recent years. Training is given throughout the country on, among other things, witnessing about Christ in a cultural and professional manner. A school for nurses has also been established with about 40 students currently. We are grateful to see how the quality of care is growing precisely in places where care is still almost non-existent. These Christian nurses, (dental) doctors and midwives are also often the first people people people hear the Good News from. Thanks to your support, both physical and spiritual needs are taken care of in Senegal.
What can we learn?
Training is not as obvious everywhere as it is with us. Investing in training is investing in people's own strengths. So that they can then do it themselves.
